Reaching up to God, in to each

Our Government

Our GovernmentWe are Presbyterian, Reformed, Protestant Christians and therefore our form of church government (or polity) reflects elder rule.

We claim a representative governmental approach. In the Presbyterian Church, the congregation elects the pastor and elders.  Together the pastor and elders constitute the Session.  The pastor and an elder elected by Session are also presbyters, representing the Kirk in the governing processes and committee work of the Presbytery of Chicago.

The Book of Confessions guides us in doctrine and Christian living.

The Presbyterian Church, USA is a “big tent” with a full spectrum of theological and political views.  Controversial issues are fearlessly debated and voted upon.  We believe in unity amidst diversity of opinion.    While believing that God alone is Lord of the conscience,  we do commit to be governed by the Book of Order.  This Book of Order and The Book of Confessions together form the Constitution of the PCUSA.  When conscience conflicts with the Book of Order, it is the right of an individual, church or presbytery to initiate an overture to the General Assembly to amend the book.
